CHARLOTTE, N.C. (May 27, 2020) – Rookie, Zane Smith takes 3rd in the NASCAR Gandor Outdoors Truck Series for GMS Racing at Charlotte Motor Speedway.
After a three-month recess from racing, Zane jumped back into his No. 21 La Paz Margarita Mix branded Chevy Silverado at the start of North Carolina Education Lottery 200 at Charlotte Motor Speedway. After starting 30th, under the direction of crew chief Bono Manion, Smith battled his way to the front of the pack. The final stage had Smith contending with his elders and veteran cup drivers, Chase Elliott and Kyle Busch for a spot on the podium. At one point, Busch asked his crew “who’s driving the 21 truck?”, when Smith went 3-wide and passed Busch in spectacular fashion.

“He was good, he was fast,” said the reigning NASCAR Cup champion and second-place finisher. “He made some bold moves and ran well and didn’t put himself in too bad of a spot.
“When he made the three-wide move down the backstretch and threw it into Turn 3, that was probably something I would do, and he did a good job holding on to that spot.”
It was a huge night for this rookie to introduce himself to the world of racing and get the accolades he so deserves. Smith is making a name for himself in the trucks and has gained a whole new allegiant of fans.
Next up, Atlanta.
